Kitchen Table Update : Tinkering with the Pzr IV

Too cold to go out to the shed last night so i looked for something to do to kill some time without actually painting and getting too much gear out.  My eyes settled on a Panzer IV awaiting a January paint slot.....

The kit is fine as it comes, not too fond of how the track sections are moulded but to be fair if you add the supplied schurzen the point is mute. Most of the mods detailed below negate all Warlords efforts to make a durable and quick build gaming piece, which they have achieved 100%.

Anyway, I waited to tinker, so first up was lowering the turret, I prefer mine to sit lower, so about 1.5mm was taken off the underside of the turret and corresponding turret schurzen plates. Whilst I'm there I also cleared out the recesses between the turret sides and the plates and opened up one side of the crew access doors

The next step was to thin down the track guards and remove the rear and front end pieces. The thinning down makes them a bit more realistic in scale, the bits removed, I feel, make the vehicle look used. I will add the removed rear section back on and depict it raised later in the day.

The major work was in replacing the lower hull schurzen plates. For this I recreated the plates and rails in plasticard and utilised the rail hangars as supplied. I was inclined to replace the hangars as well but it was getting late.

Wellington wasn't much help, and seemed singularly unimpressed.....

Looking at the IV now there is not really too much more that can be done, I replaced the turret crew hatch holds with wire and added some wheel hangers on the rear. I was going to drill out the rear stowage box, but as I said it was getting late. So thats about it prior to prep'ing for painting. I might be able to play around with the crew figures but that really depends on what the customer wants.

M10 Achilles Guards Armoured 21st ATR

Had a run on Tank Destroys recently, so this is the first of many, although I expect a good few are on the Warlord Games site already. This is the M10 17pdr Achilles from Warlord, comes with two headless crew moulded in the turret, a commander figure in metal and a choice of heads for all three. This one is made and painted as it comes (I'm not allowed to tinker too much with display stuff). Decals are a mixture of Archer Rub down, Company B, Fighting 48's and Dom's decals, although Warlord now have an extensive selection available which I will be trying out when some O.D paint drys...

For those that like the/my tinkered approach I will have some A* Eye Candy coming up in December.

As always, this one and hundreds of other examples of my work can be seen in my flickr galleries, link to the right >>>>>

M55 Quad .50 Cal Gun Truck

Had this one a while, interesting subject and a spontaneous buy, so am pleased to see it finally finished. This is a 20mm Quad Gun Truck from Sgts Mess, including crew.  The scenic base is from The Kings Armourer range.

The figures have been pinned, although the actual guntruck is not fixed to the base.

More pictures in my extensive flickr galleries - link to the right >>>>>>>>

Needs a new home.

PSC updetailed 76mm Shermans - WiP

Just had some down time so had a play with some lovely 15mm Plastic Soldier Company 76 Shermans and a Skytrex M32 ARV. Not sure the photos show it but there is quite a lot of details added.

Crews are mainly Peter Pig with some head swaps and an odd skytrex chappy slipping in. Comments welcome, might add some armour panels on the side?

Not sure whether these will ned up for Normandy or later, although I have another plan for a bulge set.....

I dont collect Amercans ( yet) so these will be up fro grabs when complete.

"Duel in the Mist" Ardennes Panther G

Inspired by the "Duel in the Mist" books, I have painted this Late Panther G with the unusual "Disc camouflage scheme. The kit is 1/56th from Warlord Games, with very few modifications, so almost as it comes. You can just make out the hand painted turret number recreated on the turret hung track links.

Again, the pictures don't do the paint justice, but you can decide for yourself in my Flickr Galleries.

Those liitle French Cars again.....

More of those little french cars, nominally "20mm", ubiquitous resin sculpts that make ideal battlefield debris. This is the full set of three this time. As you can see painted as dastardly Hun requisitions, although I'm sure I'll be painting more........

More pics in my Flickr Galleries.

Some lovely 20mm Normandy themed vignettes coming through, hopefully over the weekend watch this space.

Sdkfz 251/23 with 2cm turret

Late War goodness from Jeff at JTFM,  1/56th Resin with some very minor mods, such as the wheel hub on the glassis and a rear tarpaulin but otherwise as it comes. This one was an experiment in getting that really worn and faded camo, which i think has worked. Needs a new home now, poa.

As always loads of pictures and some other new stuff on my flickr, link to the side >>>>>>

Panzer-Lehr-Division's 316th Funklenk Panzer Company

Bit of a diversion, these two. I had two Tiger B (King Tiger - Porsche Turreted) pre-paints, not entirely sure of their origins, but clearly 1/76th, I wasnt really happy with them, so I decided to repaint to align with some excellent photo references I had found on the web whilst researching a another Tiger B commision,  The Porsche turretted Tigers saw limited use (and action) in with the  Panzer- Lehr, 316th Funklenk Panzer Company. There is now photographic evidence of most of their individual fates.

As you can see I painted tanks "10" and "11" as per the excellent illustrations on the following site:

and in line with the pictures at:

I've had my fun with these two now, so open to offers, before they go to the "reserves" drawer, or ebay......

As always loads of full fat pictures on my Flickr.

Panther A, Southern Germany, January 1945,

Great subject this one, legitimate use of judicious weathering! The concept was taken from an a picture of an unknown Panther, January '45, Southern Germany. The Panther ( albeit a G in the picture) had obviously seen a rough winter, with a hastily and now wearing whitewash pattern applied over what looks like a three tone, or possible ambush scheme. The whitewash looks as if it was applied with a broom, so hopefully I've pulled off the effect here. As I'm always asked when whitewash is involved, yes, the hairspray technique was used, amongst others.....

This is Warlord Games display one, so hopefully it'll be out as Salute, unfortunately I wont be this year, maybe 2013 for a demo come-back who knows.

As always, lots more "full fat" warts and all picture in my flickr gallery, link to the right

"PanzerKnacker" - HS129 & JU87

A change is as good as a rest, albeit only a slight change. Here we have some 15mm ( 1/200th) Aircraft models from Armaments in Miniatures (AIM). Great service from David, over the pond, and lovely miniatures. Some clean up is required but nothing out of the ordinary. Two Ju 87s and one HS129. With the Stukas I recessed an earth magnet on each to accept a flight stand, you can just make out the outline under the fuselage. With the HS129, I had both the 37mm and 75mm weapon pods so, again, I recessed earth magnets so the cannons can be swapped out.

Unfortunately, they suffered from silvering on the decals, despite the usual precautions. Couple of things I'd do different and improve on next time, but an enjoyable change from armour modelling.

So much so that I ordered a flight of Typhoons, which will look the bees knees when complete.

As always many more pics on my Flickr:

HS 129 with 75mm weapon pod in place (above), and (below) shows the location plugs for both assemblies, and you can just make out the earth magnet. The final picture shows the 37mm pod fitted.
